Steelers Host One of Draft’s Top Centers

The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted West Virginia center Zach Frazier for a local pre-draft visit.

For the second time this week, the Pittsburgh Steelers are hosting one of the 2024 NFL Draft’s top centers. West Virginia center Zach Frazier visited the Steelers on Friday, as reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Reviews’s Joe Rutter. Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson met with the team on Wednesday.

Fellow West Virginia teammate Beanie Bishop, a cornerback, joined Frazier on the pre-draft visit, as well as Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean. According to Rutter, Frazier and Bishop do not count against the NFL’s top 30 limit for pre-draft visits because of their local connection.

Frazier is listed as the second-best center by Pro Football Focus, while NFL.com ranks him as the No. 3 center on their draft board.

“Frazier’s background and build give him a high floor as a scheme-versatile center who is worthy of an early Day 2 pick and a starting role,” PFF wrote.

The Steelers are slotted to pick 51st overall in the second round of the draft and have the 84th overall pick in the third round, both of which are Day Two picks.

“Sawed-off frame with short arms and terrific power once he gets locked in. Frazier’s lack of ideal arm length will be a problem for some evaluators and could cause him problems on the next level,” NFL.com wrote. “Frazier has bulldozer drive strength in his lower half but allows his hands to do too much grabbing and hugging at times. He has quick eyes and a firm punch in pass protection, but because of his lack of length and recovery ability, he’s going to have issues if he’s forced to protect on an island.”

“Frazier has the potential to be a good backup or eventual starter, but he needs to play with consistent inside hands and must stay tight to his targets in order to mitigate his physical deficiencies.”

Frazier, a two-time All-American, was a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy (the academic Heisman). He also earned First-Team All-Big 12 accolades.

Frazier started all 12 games for the Mountaineers in 2023, while leading the team with 58 knockdown blocks, including a season-high 14 against Pitt. He did not allow a sack as part of an offensive line that ranked No. 2 among Power Five schools for fewest sacks allowed (10).
