The wait is over. The whispers are done. Aaron Rodgers is officially a Pittsburgh Steeler.

The four-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion and future Hall of Famer is headed to the AFC North after agreeing to sign a one-year contract with the Steelers, first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo. The deal is worth $13.65 million ($19.5 million max) with $10 million guaranteed. Rodgers, 41, is expected to report to mandatory minicamp in Pittsburgh next week.

This marks a legacy move for a legacy franchise. The Steelers—defined by grit, tradition and championship DNA—now turn to one of the most decorated quarterbacks of the modern era. After a two-year stint with the New York Jets, Rodgers returns to a winning culture, joining an organization that mirrors many of the values he experienced during his 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

Rodgers has long admired Pittsburgh from afar. In a 2023 appearance on Pardon My Take, he was asked to define grit and famously responded, “It means you’re from Pittsburgh.” He also cited being surrounded by Steel City’s Mike McCarthy, Tom Clements, Ben McAdoo, Tom Capers, Darren Perry and Frank Cignetti, and the tremendous impact their values had on his career.

Now, he joins forces with Mike Tomlin—the very coach he defeated in Super Bowl 45—in what could be Rodgers’ final chapter. That 2011 Super Bowl was the last for both Rodgers and the Steelers, and both are hungry to return. Since then, the two have shared a history of flirtation, but fierce competitiveness when facing one another. They will now work in partnership to restore playoff success in Pittsburgh.

Rodgers is set to turn 42 in December, and while the questions about his age are valid, signs suggest he can still be a difference-maker. Last season with the Jets, he threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, earning a 77.8 PFF grade—14th among 44 qualifying quarterbacks. That places him firmly in the league’s upper half.

Rodgers’ elite ball security and decision-making have long defined his game, aligning well with Tomlin and new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s run-heavy, ball-control, defense-first philosophy. If he can match or exceed the level of play Russell Wilson provided in 2024, fans should have plenty of reasons for optimism.

That said, Rodgers is no longer the MVP version of himself, and some may question whether his 2024 production was inflated on a struggling Jets team. The Steelers will spend the remainder of the offseason seeing what he still has in the tank when he joins the team.

The Steelers’ 2025 schedule reads like a scriptwriter’s dream.

Rodgers opens the season against the Jets—the team that released him in March—led by former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields. He’ll also reunite with old NFC North foes in the Bears, Lions, and Vikings. The marquee moment comes in Week 7, when he faces the Packers on Sunday Night Football—his first showdown with the franchise he led for nearly two decades. Each matchup will pose emotion and intrigue for all parties involved and should draw plenty of eyes.

While Rodgers has drawn criticism for his personality, world views and occasional friction with the media or front offices, his teammates have consistently praised his leadership and competitive fire. Rodgers brings the franchise pedigree and poise reminiscent of legendary Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Though it’ll be a tall task to become as beloved as Big Ben in the city of Pittsburgh, Rodgers is a clear culture fit, and his toughness will be highly revered by the fanbase.

While the acquisition of Rodgers doesn’t ascend the Steelers into odds-on title favorites, it gives a puncher’s chance to a franchise that’s been treading water with short-term quarterback solutions since Roethlisberger retired in 2021. The Steelers need more than a game manager—they need someone who can take them over the hump.

Rodgers and Pittsburgh feels like destiny. It’s a last shot at glory for a quarterback chasing one more ring, and a storied franchise desperate to return to the NFL’s top tier. Time will tell if Rodgers and the Steelers can catch lightning in a bottle – but this partnership will a be a fun one to watch nonetheless. Get ready for the show.
