T.J. Watt Inks New Record-Breaking Extension To Remain a Steeler

Steelers fans can take a deep breath, celebrate, and rejoice — T.J. Watt is here to stay.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and superstar edge rusher T.J. Watt agreed to a contract extension that makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history for the second time in his decorated career, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Overall, Watt’s new total contract is worth $144.05 million over four years, putting his average annual value just a tick above $36 million.

Watt and the front office were able seal the deal before Training Camp, despite reports of negative interactions at the negotiation table and numerous trade rumors. In the end, both sides understood that the Steelers need Watt, and Watt wants to be in Pittsburgh. It’s the right move for the team, the fans, and the man who’s given his all to the Steelers since 2017.

This new deal for Watt honors his consistency as one of the NFL’s best throughout his eight-year career. His seven Pro Bowl appearances, four All-Pro selections, and 2021 Defensive Player of the Year award speak volumes, but still don’t quantify the importance of Watt to the Steelers defense.

The Steelers are 1-11 in games in which their all-time sack leader doesn’t suit up — a staggering stat that speaks to his irreplaceable presence. Time and time again, Watt has flipped games when all hope seemed lost — making the momentum-shifting play when the offense stalled. His excellence demands the chance to compete, and the Steelers know just how vital he is now and going forward.

Watt is yet to experience a playoff win during his time in Pittsburgh. The Steelers commitment to Watt shows their trust in him as the team’s most valuable player long-term. This isn’t just a reward for his service, but it’s a vote of confidence that he will continue to lead the franchise for years to come.

A flurry of offseason moves made it clear: Pittsburgh is serious about building a Super Bowl contender around Watt. By bringing in Aaron Rodgers, D.K. Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith, the Steelers assembled a veteran core ready to win now. They capped off a bold summer by extending their best player — the leader they trust to guide this team to a deep playoff run.

Keeping T.J. Watt in the black and gold wasn’t just a priority — it was a necessity. For a franchise built on tenacity, hard work, and tradition, rewarding the player who embodies it all was a no-brainer. Watt has already cemented his legacy in Pittsburgh. Now, the Steelers have ensured it continues in the city he calls home.
