Steelers ‘Talking Trade’ Up in Round One

The Pittsburgh Steelers are trying to trade up in the first round to draft Toledo CB Quinyon Mitchell, per a recent report.

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be positioning themselves for a bold move up the draft board.

Sportskeeda’s NFL Draft Insider Tony Pauline reported that the Steelers are interested in trading up with the Denver Broncos to secure the No. 12 overall pick, with their sights set on Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell.

“I’m told the Steelers and Broncos are talking trade as Pittsburgh is another team that is targeting Mitchell and would move up to draft him,” Pauline wrote.

Mitchell has turned heads with his impressive athleticism and coverage skills, leading many draft analysts to rank him as the top cornerback prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft. He boasts a 4.33-second 40-yard dash and 38-inch vertical. In 2023, he had one interception and led his team with 18 pass breakups.

This report is surprising since the Steelers haven’t seemed to show any pre-draft interest in Mitchell. He didn’t have a formal meeting with the team at the Scouting Combine, nor did he come in for a Top 30 visit. Steelers brass also wasn’t present at Toledo’s Pro Day.

And while Pittsburgh does need a corner, it hasn’t been considered as pressing as the need for a center or wide receiver.

Pauline also mentioned that the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly interested in Mitchell and in talks to trade up with the Broncos in an attempt to draft him. Pittsburgh would have the initial advantage over Philadelphia with their first-round pick being two spots ahead of the Eagles’ No. 22 pick.

If the report is correct, a potential bidding war could play out between the Steelers and Eagles.
