After months of speculation, the Pittsburgh Steelers made their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft Thursday night in Detroit.

The Steelers selected Washington’s Troy Fautanu with the 20th overall pick. The 6-foot-4, 317-pound offensive tackle was named First-Team All-Pac-12 in 2023, as he helped lead the Huskies to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

Fautanu won the Morris Trophy as the top offensive lineman in the Pac-12, an award that is voted on by Pac-12 defensive linemen.

In 2022, Fautanu started all 13 games for Washington on his way to Second-team All-Pac-12 Conference honors. He played three games at left tackle, one game at guard, and returned to left tackle for the remainder of the season.

With the selection of Fautanu, it likely means the Steelers will bring him in to be the new right tackle, eventually moving last year’s first-round pick, Broderick Jones, to left tackle. General manager Omar Khan commented on Jones moving back to left tackle last month at the NFL Scouting Combine.

With Dan Moore, Jr., still on the team at left tackle, it gives Fautanu time to learn the position and adjust to the speed of the game. It also means this will probably be Moore’s last year in Pittsburgh. Of course, this will depend on how long it takes Fautanu to adjust to the NFL.

Fautanu’s Honors:

  • 2023 All-America Third Team (Associated Press)
  • 2023 Morris Trophy Winner
  • 2023 All-Pac-12 First Team
