The Pittsburgh Steelers sent a message to the rest of the NFL through the draft over the last three days.

That message?

They are tired of being pushed around on the offensive line.

With the help of the scouting department, head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan made a concerted effort to bolster the Steelers’ offensive line. Pittsburgh used three of their top five picks on the O-Line.

“I would say it’s a little bit of everything. It was a strong offensive line group,” Khan said. “We’ve talked plenty of times about how we feel about the importance of the offensive line, and we got through day one –obviously . . . Even in the fourth round when we had a chance to get Mason McCormick, he’s a guy that we had rated really high up there and we had a couple players at the position who are in the last year of their contracts and felt it was important to address it if he was there, and we did.”

The Steelers drafted Washington offensive tackle Troy Fautanu with their first-round pick and then used their second-round selection to get West Virginia center Zack Frazier. But they were not done there.

Pittsburgh used it is fourth-round pick on South Dakota State guard Mason McCormick. All three guys were at least First-Team All-Conference players and two earned First-Team All-American honors (Fautanu and McCormick).

The biggest thing about all three is their experience. They were all at least three-year starters in college and played in 40-plus games.

“We’re looking for guys with talent. Oftentimes that talent is coupled with experience,” Tomlin said. “It’s good to have a group that is mature as players and as people, and I think that’s reflective of the collective that you’re talking about. All that means is we should expect those guys to have a high floor and maybe have a good presentation of what they’re capable of early on, and for that, we’re excited certainly.”

Tomlin is excited about his three newest additions to the offensive line, but he isn’t sure how they will impact the O-Line room just yet.

“Obviously, we’ll give them an opportunity to do that, but needless to say we’re really excited about having them,” Tomlin said. “As Omar mentioned, we had some testy moments there leading up to our picks but that’s a good thing from my perspective. It means we had guys on our board that we’re excited about the potential of taking, and I think in all three of those instances we were really excited.”

The message is CLEAR. Now, can Arthur Smith do with this talent, what Matt Canada couldn’t, and mold this unit into the relentless pounding Offensive System that he has been known for. It’s interesting to note his accomplishments in Tennessee, where his Quarterback flourished and he had Derek Henry. He inherited and backfield consisting of Najee Harris, the ONLY Running Back to EVER rush for 1,000 in his first three years in Pittsburgh. The Steelers have a reputation for being a much better Offensive team which features a particularly strong Rushing game. Can they reestablish themselves as a “Contender or Pretender” in a “LOADED” AFC Playoff field? That field includes the Back to Back Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills, who dispatched a clearly inferior Steelers squad last Season.

I’m interested to see how much better they can be in their Passing game, after completely revamping the Quarterback Room and Wide Receiver corps this Offseason. The Steelers have moved on from Quarterback Kenny Pickett, who never showed the talent the Steelers thought he possessed when they invested their first round NFL Draft selection in 2022 on the University of Pittsburgh Quarterback. (Note: He was sent packing for a late round Draft pick, and a promise not to return to Pittsburgh in the future). Mason Rudolph led the Steelers late last Season a rallied the Steelers to make the playoffs. He was released after signing with the Tennessee Titans, where he’ll back up another first round selection in Will Levis. He’s billed as a first round talent that slid into the second round of the NFL Draft. He struggled last season, but vows not to be “another Pickett” in Nashville. The Steelers have brought in Quarterback Russell Wilson, a former Super Bowl Champion Quarterback who struggled in Denver the last two Seasons. Also in the mix is Justin Fields the former First Round selection of the Chicago Bears. And another Quarterback in Will Allen the former backup Quarterback in Buffalo last season. These signings also sent a message to the League. That being, we’re going to throw the ball much more efficiently than last season. Their starting Quarterbacks amassed a paltry 13 touchdown passes last season. (Russell Wilson threw 23 touchdown passes, in a year where he was “struggling” in an Offensive system that did not feature his strengths which includes throwing deep on the outside).

So, the question is, can the Steelers capitalize on all of these Off-Season moves? Can they backup their “Message”?
