The 2024 NFL Draft is only a couple of weeks away and the Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing to look at bolstering their depth in the defensive backfield.
According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Steelers are hosting Rutgers cornerback Max Melton for a pre-draft visit on Monday.
The Steelers are already familiar with Melton, who the team scouted at the 2024 Senior Bowl. He also had a formal interview with the team at the 2024 NFL Combine. Melton tested well at the combine. He ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash while also showcasing elite explosiveness with a 40.5-inch vertical and an 11-foot, 4-inch broad jump.
He was a three-time All-Big Ten selection at cornerback, starting 40 games for Rutgers, recording eight interceptions and 21 passes defended.
Melton is billed as one of the top slot cornerback prospects in the draft, a position the Steelers could use help at. Melton’s average draft position at NFL Mock Draft Database is currently 57th, just after the Steelers’ second pick of the draft.
The Steelers have some holes to fill in the cornerback room after letting Patrick Peterson and Chandon Sullivan walk in free agency. Right now, Donte Jackson and Joey Porter Jr. are expected to begin the season as the team’s two starting outside corners. Melton could slide perfectly into the slot position on day one.
