The Pittsburgh Steelers are trading quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles, according to multiple reports. Philadelphia will also receive a 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 120) from Pittsburgh in exchange for a 2024 third-round pick (No. 98) and two 2025 seventh-round picks, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The 25-year-old quarterback, who was a first-round selection by the Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft, had shown promise during his time with the team but struggled with consistency and staying healthy. Pickett compiled a 14-10 record in 24 starts over the last two seasons. In 2023, he threw for 2,070 yards to go along with six touchdowns and four interceptions.
Pickett also engineered six fourth-quarter comebacks and seven game-winning drives during his time in the Steel City.
The news was announced on the same day Pittsburgh officially signed former Denver Broncos QB Russell Wilson to a one-year contract.
Kenny Pickett was reportedly traded to the Eagles because of how he handled the team signing Wilson. Pickett originally agreed to compete for the starting quarterback job, but changed his mind once Wilson was signed, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
After finding out about Wilson’s signing on Sunday night, Pickett spoke with Head Coach Mike Tomlin the next morning and found out the veteran quarterback would be taking first team reps. He asked for a trade and is now heading to Philadelphia, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
The trade also represents a homecoming of sorts for Pickett, who is from nearby New Jersey and grew up an Eagles fan.
