The Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing in free-agent wide receiver Mike Williams for a visit this week, according to multiple reports. Williams was released by the Los Angeles Chargers on March 13th after seven seasons with the team.
The veteran wide receiver also has visits scheduled with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers this week, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Los Angeles could also attempt to re-sign Williams after trading Pro-Bowl wide receiver Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears.
The Chargers selected Williams seventh overall in the 2017 NFL draft. He’s posted two 1,000-yard seasons (2019 and 2021) and has averaged 15.6 yards per reception in his career.
The 6-foot-4 receiver has been hampered by injuries over the past two seasons. In 2022, he dealt with a high-ankle sprain and a back injury that forced him to miss four games over the course of the regular season and the Chargers’ lone playoff game that year.
Williams, 29, also sustained a season-ending ACL tear to his left knee in Week 3 last season. In the three games prior to the injury, he had 19 receptions for 249 yards and one touchdown.
Williams was entering the final year of a three-year, $60 million contract that he signed with the Chargers in 2022. His 2024 cap hit would’ve been $20 million; the team elected to release the wideout to reach cap compliance ahead of the new league year.
The down-field threat caught 309 passes for 4,806 yards and 31 touchdowns during his time with the Chargers.
